Employment Struggles
I'm going to do something shocking and use this as an actual blog post.
I am SO sick and tired of applying to jobs, only to be ignored completed, or even worse the interview is scheduled and then the role is filled before I can interview. Today the interview was cancelled a minute before the scheduled time. Then the person who would be interviewing me ignored me on email and phone.
I am mentally exhausted. I am broke all the time. I don't get unemployment because I've never been eligible for it. The only good thing about this is that I have full healthcare coverage and food stamps.
I am a medical assistant with experience, I am a certified professional medical coder with internship experience, I have experience in retail, yet I cannot even get a call back from McDonald's, let alone a good healthcare job.
I've considered becoming a behavioral health tech, but I just truly don't want to be hit/bitten at work. I also couldn't deal with the families of children disagreeing with a preset therapy plan while I'm physically stuck in their home. The other options I was looking at was security, or 911 dispatcher, but dispatch classes are few and far between into next year, and also expensive. And security can be dangerous.
At this point, being 30 and just defeated by how unsuccessful I am in life, I am considering going to a trade school. Like welding. Or automobile tech or something that is actually in demand. There is literally no other options for me and I'm literally five minutes outside of San Francisco. I am mildly considering an IT course, but tech is so unstable and unsafe while also being over saturated right now and I don't trust it. But then, you have to deal with stereotypical personalities in 'conservative' trade jobs too. The other risk is I spend time and money doing a trade school and then no one wants to hire me (like I've done twice now). I don't know what to do.
The trades I'm considering:
Electrician
Welder (part of machinist trade) (honestly this is most appealing to me)
Aircraft Maintenance Technology (Can't hurt with SFO next to me and their planes literally falling to pieces in the sky every week)
HVAC (still don't really understand what this job even is)
The guilt I'm feeling is that I am about to finish my BA in psychology next month, and I'm waiting to hear back from the two colleges I applied to for a Master's to become a therapist. If I get in to my top choice, that's $60k+ I'll need to fund. If I get into the state school, which is slim, that's likely covered by school loans, but I'll still want to make some kind of income for three years I'm in the program. If I don't get into either program, then my last choices are: work while getting med school pre-reqs done, or work while doing an online MFT program (which I really don't want to do an online only program but if it's accredited at the end of the day I don't care.) The online only school would also be $60k+ so I'd need to work regardless.
I'm feeling guilty too because I've never been the fanartist who can drop a new print and have thousands of followers want it. I can't make money that way. Commissions have always been my most lucrative offering as an artist, but it's often mentally very taxing. It's also unstable. I don't have a lot of followers to drum up a successful pays-my-rent-every-month Patreon, and with the way of algorithms and sites are these days, I likely won't ever. I'm not trying to complain for sympathy, but this is just how it's been for me.
I know it's stupid to feel guilty for things like this, but I just am in this nebulous space between being apparently unemployable while also not being unemployable enough to receive livable benefits while continuing job hunting.
So I guess I'm looking for opinions on trade professions. I'm trans, but I pass masc in public save for my voice really. I also am not the kind of person to wear pride pins or color my hair rainbow, which would draw attention that way. I'm not too concerned about mean people in a trade job, because honestly the rudest people I've worked with have been in healthcare anyway. And a trade job would mean no customer service positions/working with my hands, which requires little mental gymnastics.
Also pointless, but true, I keep thinking of Debbie in Shameless getting her welder certification after becoming a teen parent.
I guess the takeaway here is, I'm more willing to be hurt on the job by a machine mistake on my part than I am willing to be hurt by other people assaulting me (very real in healthcare jobs/security) while working.

Enhancing Healthcare RCM with Effective Medical Coding Management
Tumblr media
In today’s fast-evolving healthcare landscape, efficient revenue cycle management (RCM) is more than just a back-office function it is a vital component that directly impacts a healthcare provider’s financial health and operational efficiency. Among the various pillars of RCM, medical coding management stands out as a critical element that ensures accurate reimbursement, compliance, and financial sustainability.
This blog explores the importance of medical coding management in healthcare RCM, common challenges, and practical strategies for improvement empowering providers, administrators, and billing professionals with insights to optimize their revenue flow.
What Is Medical Coding Management?
Medical coding management refers to the process of overseeing the assignment of standardized codes to medical diagnoses, procedures, treatments, and services. These codes, such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, are used to translate patient encounters into billable data that insurance companies and government payers can understand.
A well-managed medical coding process ensures that:
Clinical documentation is accurately captured and coded.
Claims are submitted with minimal errors.
Healthcare organizations remain compliant with regulatory standards.
Reimbursements are processed efficiently without unnecessary delays or denials.
In short, medical coding management acts as the bridge between clinical care and financial reimbursement a role that’s indispensable in the larger RCM ecosystem.
Why Medical Coding Management Matters in RCM
The impact of medical coding on RCM is profound. Here's how efficient coding management drives performance:
1. Improves Reimbursement Accuracy
Errors in coding often lead to claim denials or underpayments. Effective coding management ensures that services provided are coded precisely, enabling providers to get reimbursed accurately for the work they’ve done. Every incorrect code represents potential lost revenue or a compliance risk.
2. Reduces Claim Denials
Denial management is one of the most resource-draining aspects of RCM. According to industry reports, a significant percentage of denials stem from coding errors. By implementing stringent coding quality checks and training programs, organizations can reduce denial rates and improve cash flow.
3. Ensures Regulatory Compliance
Compliance with guidelines from CMS, HIPAA, and other regulatory bodies is non-negotiable. Medical coding management systems help ensure codes are up-to-date and align with changing regulatory standards thus reducing the risk of audits, penalties, or legal consequences.
4. Enhances Revenue Integrity
Maintaining revenue integrity means that the revenue a healthcare provider receives is both accurate and defensible. Good coding practices support integrity by matching clinical documentation with coded data and ensuring transparency across the revenue cycle.
Common Challenges in Medical Coding Management
Despite its importance, many healthcare organizations struggle with coding inefficiencies. Some common challenges include:
❌ Lack of Skilled Coders
Medical coding requires deep knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, payer guidelines, and coding systems. A shortage of certified and experienced coders can lead to backlogs and billing errors.
❌ Incomplete Clinical Documentation
If physicians don’t document diagnoses or procedures thoroughly, coders are forced to make assumptions or send repeated queries slowing down the revenue cycle and increasing the risk of errors.
❌ Constant Regulatory Updates
Coding standards, particularly ICD and CPT, undergo frequent revisions. Keeping up with these changes requires ongoing education and system updates.
❌ Limited Technology Integration
Manual processes or outdated systems limit the efficiency and accuracy of coding workflows. Lack of integration between EHRs and billing systems is a major bottleneck.
Best Practices to Optimize Medical Coding Management
Improving medical coding management can significantly elevate your RCM performance. Here are actionable strategies to implement:
✅ Invest in Coding Education & Certification
Continuous training and certification programs for coders (such as CPC or CCS) ensure that your team stays up-to-date with evolving guidelines. Encourage coders to attend industry webinars, subscribe to coding newsletters, and undergo annual refresher courses.
✅ Leverage Technology & Automation
Adopting coding software, AI-powered coding assistants, and computer-assisted coding (CAC) systems can improve speed and accuracy. These tools flag inconsistencies, suggest appropriate codes, and reduce manual errors boosting coder productivity and claim turnaround times.
✅ Conduct Regular Coding Audits
Schedule periodic internal audits to assess coding quality, identify patterns of errors, and ensure documentation supports billed services. Audits help detect potential compliance issues early and provide opportunities for feedback and training.
✅ Improve Clinical Documentation Practices
Collaborate with physicians and clinicians to enhance documentation habits. Implement Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs to ensure medical records contain all the necessary information for accurate coding. Encourage real-time documentation using EHR templates.
✅ Integrate EHR with Billing Systems
Streamline coding workflows by integrating electronic health records (EHR) with your billing software. This ensures real-time access to patient data, reduces duplicate entry, and enables faster, more accurate coding.
The Role of Outsourcing in Medical Coding Management
For many healthcare providers especially small practices or rural hospitals maintaining an in-house coding team can be both expensive and challenging. In such cases, outsourcing medical coding to a reputable RCM partner can be a strategic solution.
Benefits of outsourcing include:
Access to certified and experienced coders.
Reduced operational costs.
Improved turnaround times and scalability.
24/7 support and global delivery models.
Reduced compliance risk through expert oversight.
However, it’s crucial to choose a vendor that adheres to HIPAA standards, uses robust QA protocols, and has domain expertise in your specialty.
Future Trends in Medical Coding Management
As healthcare evolves, so does the landscape of medical coding. Some future-facing trends include:
AI and Machine Learning: More providers are integrating AI-driven coding solutions that learn from historical data to improve coding recommendations.
Predictive Analytics: Advanced analytics can forecast claim denials and suggest coding changes in advance.
Value-Based Coding: With the shift to value-based care, coding is becoming more outcome-driven, focusing on quality metrics alongside service documentation.
Remote Coding Teams: Post-pandemic, remote and hybrid coding teams are becoming the norm, supported by cloud-based platforms and secure VPNs.
Final Thoughts
Efficient medical coding management is not just about getting paid it's about building a sustainable, compliant, and resilient revenue cycle. From accurate reimbursement to data-driven decision-making, the role of coding in healthcare RCM is central to operational success.
By embracing best practices, leveraging technology, and focusing on continuous improvement, healthcare providers can overcome common coding challenges and unlock the full potential of their revenue cycle. Whether in-house or outsourced, the key is to treat coding as a strategic function one that fuels both clinical and financial excellence.
